Viticulture has a long history in Argentina with the first vine cuttings being brought to Santiago de Estero in 1557, during the Spanish colonisation of the Americas. Argentinian wines were predominantly consumed domestically until the late 1990's when great leaps in quality were made and they turned their attention to export markets. The most important of the wine growing areas is Mendoza, which produces more than 60% of all Argentine wines. Due to the high altitude and low humidity vineyards rarely face problems with insects or grape diseases, allowing cultivation with little or no pesticides.
