In 1788 the First Fleet landed in Australia, bringing with them a cargo of vine cuttings collected in the Cape of Good Hope en-route. The first plantings were in the small area of Farm Cove, near to where the Sydney Harbour Bridge stands today. Some 200 years later there are approximately 2,000 wine companies in Australia and the industry employs an estimated 31,000 people. Australia is a vast country, but each winemaking region has its own unique identity, climate and topography. This ensures a great diversity of wine styles across the land. Old winemaking traditions are respected, but many winemakers embrace modern technological innovations and are eager to trial new ideas, varietals and concepts across all aspects of winemaking.
