A long and mysterious history surrounds the rugged tracts of land on the side of Lake Dunstan of New Zealand, that bear the name “Lochar Estate Vineyards”. Lochar was the site of successful gold claim in the 1860’s by a young, adventurous prospector. The rich rough soils passed on through the generations. Overtime, the snow-fed Lochar stream created an alluvial soil fan, on which the magnificent Lochar Estate Vineyards were planted at the turn of this century. The terroir is a dark mixture of porous soil and gravel schist. Following an innovative scientific model, Lochar’s vines are positioned to the late afternoon sun, which gently ripens the grapes during warm autumn evenings, giving the wines an elemental character of rich complexity. Lochar’s solar rhythmic viticultureand artisan winemaking produces unique, award-winning wines.
